Jahid Ahmed, Kent County Cricket Club Bowling Coach

As a former first-class cricketer and current Kent CCC bowling coach, Jahid Ahmed knows just how important staying fit, healthy and fresh can be to athletic performance. We spoke to Jahid as he took delivery of his new Mammoth Rise Essential mattress and Ultimate pillows to talk sleep, health and fast bowling.

Hi Jahid,

How did you first get into cricket?

It was my older brother who introduced me to cricket. I used to follow him down to the local cricket club as a way of getting out of the house. The rest, as they say, was history. I’ve been involved in the sport ever since.

How would you describe your career?

Unfortunately my career didn’t last as long as I would have liked but I am still very fortunate to have played professional cricket for 6 years. The experience of playing first-class sport was just unbelievable. I’d describe that period as being surreal, exciting and fun.

What would you class as your proudest moment in sport?

Making my debut against Australia’s 2005 Ashes team in that year would have to be top of my sporting achievements.

Can you tell us a little bit about your typical fitness regime and how you stay healthy?

As I’m no longer a professional cricketer, my exercise is probably not too dissimilar to your average person – standard home exercises such as sit-ups, press-ups, squats and lunges. I also do bowling specific drills before the season starts, of course.

Can you tell us what you are looking forward to in the next 12 months?

I work for Kent Performance Squad as a Fast Bowling Coach. Ahead of this summer I am looking forward to making a difference to the players and helping Kent CCC to progress and achieve success. I want to help bring through the next generation, producing a raw fast bowler who will represent Kent 1st XI this year.

Mammoth mattresses are known for their health benefits, particularly for people recovering from injury or taking preventative steps to maintain condition. Have you suffered any injuries during your career?

Yes, I have suffered from back injuries in my career and since I’ve stopped playing cricket professionally, I’ve always had stiff back and neck. I used to wake up in the morning in quite a bit of pain and discomfort, which is one of the main reasons I decided to look into getting a new mattress and pillows.

I’ve changed brand several times in the last few years and nothing helped to improve my condition – until I had my Mammoth mattress and pillows delivered. Every morning I wake up now without any neck or back pain. I am so happy that I bought from Mammoth, the combination of mattress and pillows has helped me to avoid stiffness in my back and neck so much.

How important do you consider rest time and recovery to be as part of your training regime?

Having rest time is very important for me, as I am always coaching so I don’t really get much time to relax my back. Only time I get to relax is when I get in the bed to sleep.  Ideally, I like to get 7–8 hours, which is what I need to ensure that I wake up feeling refreshed. If I don’t get enough rest I really do notice the difference in my mood  and energy levels.
